IJAHMAN LEVY

Ijahman Levi est né dans les collines de Christiana, à Manchester Jamaïque, le 19 juin 1946. Né sous le nom de Trevor Sutherland, il passe une partie de son enfance à Trenchtown , et après avoir été au contact de Joe Higgs, à l'âge de 17 ans, il enregistre son premier tune pour le producteur Duke Reid.

Dans les années 1960, après avoir émigré en Angleterre avec sa famille, Trevor chante en lead dans le groupe Vibration .
Un an après, sa carrière est lancée, notamment grâce à ses shows au Q Club de Londres aux côtés de Wilson Pickett et Bill Stewart.

C'est lors d'un séjour en prison (long séjour de 3 ans) que Trevor alias " The Youth " devient " Ijahman " et écrit le magnifique " Jah heavy load ".
En sortant de prison, il est seul, sa famille l'a quitté et trouve refuge et guidance à Saint Agnès Place, siège du mouvement des 12 tribus d'Israël .
En 75, Ijahman enregistre Jah heavy load sur le label Concrete Jungle, s'en suit une collaboration particulièrement réussie avec le tromboniste Rico Rodrigues, sur l'album Man from Warika, sur Island. Il attire alors l'attention de Chris Blackwell qui lui propose en 1976 de produire deux albums.

Alors en 1977, souhaitant retrouver le son jamaïcain, et plus particulièrement celui de Sly and Robbie, Ijahman se rend en Jamaïque, et coproduit avec Geffrey Chung, ses deux plus beaux albums, Hail I Hymn et Are we a Warrior, qui recevront une consécration internationale.
Il décide alors de créer sa propre maison de production , Tree Roots records International. En 1981, Ijahman épouse Madge, celle qui deviendra également sa partenaire pour de nombreux tunes, et particulièrement sur I do qui restera pendant six semaines en première place des charts reggae en Angleterre.
Aujourd'hui, Ijahman est l'auteur de 28 albums, il a joué dans le monde entier et particulièrement en Europe et en Afrique. Sa musique est marquée par de fameuses collaborations, notamment avec Earl China Smith, Sly n'Robbie, Ras Michael et Black Uhuru.
